What makes us a 4.5 Star agency?
Like many industries that measure companies with a star system, customer service is front and center in the criteria considered. For the home care industry, this is reflected in patient satisfaction scores, which capture an agency’s timeliness of initiating care, responsiveness, attentiveness, and professionalism.
When the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid (CMS) initiated the Home Care Star Ratings program this year, they cited two domains to scrutinize: process and outcomes. The five star rating system is designed to enable consumers to better compare agencies with more transparent and easier to understand information.
In addition to patient satisfaction, the agency’s provision of drug education on all medications for both the patient and his/her caregiver, and influenza immunization for the current flu system are also considered. Outcomes – how well a patient does under the agency’s care – include improvement in such areas as ambulation, bed transfers, shortness of breath (dyspnea), and pain that interferes with activity. In addition, acute care hospitalizations/re-hospitalizations within the 60-day period of being on homecare services is also measured.
Just released in July 2015, CMS awarded NVNA and Hospice 4.5 out of 5 stars for such measures and outcomes. This places us in the Top 10% of all homecare agencies measured. And we are particularly pleased given the Massachusetts average is 3.5 stars and the National average 3 stars.
